Apples – The antioxidant power in apples ranks among the highest in all fruits. Metabolic Balance® requires you to eat one apple a day. Eating apples with a peel protects cells from cancer-inducing oxidative damage. Prevents the start of cancer growth. Stops continued tumor growth and promotes cancer cell death. Apples are also a good source of fiber and vitamin C.
Ginger – In studies, ginger is shown to fight cancer by causing cancer cells to destroy themselves. You can read more on the how here. Tumeric which is part of the ginger family, has shown promising results in the treatment and prevention of cancer.
Mushrooms – Researchers have been focusing on reishi, maitake and shiitake mushrooms in their studies and have found that mushrooms stimulate the immune system and increasing the survival duration of cancer patients.
Walnuts – Although many nuts fit into the category of cancer fighting, walnuts are the nut studied most by researchers. Walnuts contain antioxidant properties and are an excellent source of copper, manganese and magnesium. Metabolic Balance® requires you to start your meal with a bite of protein. Nuts are an excellent way to accomplish this when you are eating out and about. Here is a health talk discussing nuts and weight control. Just remember that nuts are a protein and if you have a full serving, it is your only protein for a meal. Talk with your coach if you need more clarification about using nuts on the Metabolic Balance® plan.
Salmon – Wild Salmon – Provides omega-3 fatty acids, a polyunsaturated fat, which has potentially beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. Ideally, you will eat two servings of fish during the week. A few weeks ago, we shared reasons to eat fish and we linked to some helpful articles regarding eating fish. If you want something to carry around, you can download a consumer guide to seafood created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
